Open heart surgery on a premature baby in Murcia
The ground breaking operation took place in the Arrixaca Hospital
The Arrixaca hospital in Murcia has performed open heart surgery on a premature baby for the first time.
The baby was born at 27 weeks and weighs no more than 800 grams.
He remains in a critical condition because of the lack of oxygen reaching the partially developed organs.  The operation took place on April 25 but details have only just been released.
A surgical team was led by the cardiovascular surgeon Ramón Arcas, and is now recovering in the Intensive Care unit.
